Why EOS® works: A practical guide for growing businesses
Introduction: What’s driving your growth?
About two years ago, we were introduced to EOS® and began implementing it for Amplify with the help of an incredible Implementer (Anastasia Toomey, you rock!), and it has been the single biggest growth move for our business.
If you’re like most small to midsize business owners (like us), you didn’t start your company to become a professional juggler. But somewhere along the way, you find yourself managing people, problems, profit and process – often all at once. You want to grow, but every step forward seems to create new bottlenecks. That’s where the Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS®) comes in.
EOS® is more than a trendy framework. It’s a practical, proven way to run a business with clarity, focus and accountability. And at Amplify, we especially love working with businesses that run on EOS® because they have such clarity about where they are now and where they want to go.
What is EOS®, really?
If you’ve heard someone in your network mention EOS® and you found yourself nodding along politely but obliviously, you’re not alone. It’s one of those acronyms that gets tossed around a lot—usually with the words “game-changer” or “we finally got our act together” close behind.
But what actually is the Entrepreneurial Operating System®?
At its core, EOS® is a simple set of tools and principles. For us, it meant adopting best practices like regular meeting structures (even when we were just a team of two at the time), naming our Core Value and our Core Focus™ and setting “rocks,” or goals that we were planning to hit each quarter – and then actually hitting them.
You might think of EOS® like a playbook—not for what you do (your industry, product or service), but for how you operate.
EOS® was created by Gino Wickman, who introduced the concept in his book Traction. Since then, EOS® has been implemented in more than 100,000 companies worldwide, and we can personally attest to its impact.
EOS® is built around the idea that, while every business is unique, the challenges most growing companies face are not. They tend to fall into six key areas:
The Six Key Components™ of EOS®:
- Vision – Getting everyone on the same page about where you’re going and how you’ll get there.
- People – Making sure you have the right people in the right seats.
- Data – Managing the business through key metrics instead of gut feelings.
- Issues – Solving problems as they arise—instead of kicking the can down the road.
- Process – Documenting and following the essential processes that drive consistency and scalability.
- Traction® – Bringing discipline and accountability into the day-to-day, so things actually get done.
Each of these components has specific, battle-tested tools associated with it. For example:
- The Vision/Traction Organizer™ (V/TO®). This helps you clearly define and communicate your business’s mission, values, long-term goals, and 90-day targets. And it’s all on one page!
- Rocks are your most important quarterly goals, giving your team focus and direction.
- Scorecards track weekly metrics that predict future success, so you can act early rather than react late.
- Level 10 Meetings™ create a rhythm of weekly check-ins that are structured, efficient, and results-focused.
None of this is fluff. EOS® isn’t about hype or hustle culture.
For us, implementing the L10 meeting was awkward at first but then truly revolutionary for our business. Now, every week at the same time, we have a team meeting that lets us work through an efficient structure, name issues, discuss how to solve those issues, list out our to-dos and then make sure we share “cascading messages,” or any messages that others on our team need to know in light of the meeting.
It’s about taking ownership of your business. And not just in terms of outcomes, but in how it runs, how people communicate and how decisions are made.
And here’s the key: EOS® is not just for founders (called “Visionaries” in EOS® speak). It’s for leadership teams. Everyone from your head of operations to your marketing lead has a role to play in implementing and maintaining EOS®. That shared ownership is part of what makes it so powerful.
Why EOS® works for growing businesses
EOS® isn’t a magic wand—but it works because it solves real, root-level problems. Here’s why it’s so effective for scaling companies:
It brings clarity to the chaos
Without EOS®, many businesses operate on instinct. Decisions happen in reaction to fires, not based on long-term goals. EOS® introduces tools that force you to clarify your mission, values, marketing strategy and long-term goals.
You stop guessing. You start leading.
It connects strategy to execution
One of the most powerful elements of EOS® is the Level 10 Meeting™ structure. These weekly check-ins keep teams focused on metrics, rocks (goals), and accountability. It’s not just a meeting—it’s a pulse check for your entire business.
EOS® also introduces Scorecards, helping you track performance weekly instead of waiting for month-end surprises.
It gets the right people in the right seats
People issues are one of the biggest hidden blockers to growth. EOS® uses a simple but effective tool called GWC™ (Get it, Want it, Capacity to do it). This helps you evaluate whether your team members are a good fit for their roles.
It’s not about micromanagement. It’s about alignment.
It builds a culture of accountability without burnout
EOS® helps you define clear roles and responsibilities, so your team knows what they’re responsible for—and how success is measured. When expectations are clear, tension goes down and performance goes up.
The first time our Implementer asked us, “So, who is the Visionary on this team?” we just looked at her and then at each other and were like, “Both of us?” We have come so incredibly far since then.
It’s accountability with heart, not pressure for pressure’s sake.
Real results: what EOS® looks like in practice
At Amplify, we work with business owners who are deeply committed to the companies they’ve built. But despite their best efforts, they often come to us feeling stuck. They’ve reached a point where their instinct and hustle have taken them far—but not far enough to scale with sanity.
Part of operating on EOS® is naming your 10-year goal, and often that goal is represented by a specific dollar amount that would make it possible. But then each business has to break down which weekly activities will lead to that 10-year goal, and that can be daunting, especially for Visionaries who don’t love numbers.
This is where we provide financial forecasting that helps us plug in those weekly activities and see how they will play out into the future toward that goal. We get to create better and worse scenarios to create different ETAs to the goal and then see how changing our behaviors today will impact that ETA.
Here’s what we’ve learned: When you implement EOS® well, it creates visible, measurable and deeply felt transformation.
We’ve seen it play out in dozens of businesses—some with 10 team members, others with 100+. Regardless of size or industry, the pattern is the same: when EOS® takes root, things change in real, tangible ways.
Is EOS® right for your business?
EOS® is a great fit if:
- You have 10–250 employees
- You feel stuck in day-to-day operations
- You have a leadership team that wants clarity and accountability
- You’re ready to grow but unsure how to scale without chaos
It’s not ideal for early-stage startups or businesses without a leadership team in place. But for growing companies who want structure and clarity, it’s a game-changer.
Final Thoughts
EOS® works because it helps entrepreneurs lead intentionally, not reactively. It’s simple, structured, and human-centered. Just like the businesses we love working with. And it has changed the entire way we do business at Amplify, pushing us gently into each next growth step we needed to take.
We even had that chance to sponsor the 2025 EOS Worldwide conference in Washington, D.C., where we got to meet hundreds of incredible people who are Visionaries and Integrators running incredible businesses all over the world.
If you’re curious about how EOS® could work for your company, we encourage you to dig deeper. Whether or not you work with Amplify, EOS® is a framework that can transform the way you run your business—and your life.
